Monday, June 28, 2021: The sport of MuayThai inhaled a fresh breath of air last night on the Italian island of Sardinia when SMTA promotions hosted the MuayThai Challenges Covid event.

The meaning was apt in the sense that the world has been turned upside down over the past year and a half, but there is a fresh sense of hope for a return to normalcy. All of us involved in promoting MuayThai are ready for the much-needed return to activities.

Two WBC MuayThai Italian title championships headlined last night’s event with the vacant middleweight and super-featherweight national titles on the line.

Federico Loi took home the WBC middleweight title after the five-round war of attrition with Andrea Gallone. Loi spent his training camp for this fight at Sangtiennoi Gym in Thailand, home of the late, great Sangtiennoi. This was a significant victory for Federico to which he dedicated to his teacher, Sangtiennoi, who as we know, recently passed away.

The WBC Italian super-featherweight title contest between Francesco Sotgiu and Niccolo Diomedi ended in a stalemate as both fighters gave it their all in a hotly-contested matchup — a rematch down the line is on the cards.

A special words of thanks to the team at Serra Academy for hosting the championship fights and to our very own Max Baggio, and his team at the WBC the MuayThai Italy, we salute you all.

On to the next one…..MuayThai is back!
