Wednesday, July 26, 2023: The WBC MuayThai wishes to announce that on Saturday, June 24, 2023, the WBC MuayThai Australian Super-middleweight title showdown took place in Brisbane between Meeka Michael and Nick Trask, on the night Nick Trask was awarded the victory via a split points decision victory and thus fore became WBC MuayThai super-middleweight champion of Australia.
In the immediate aftermath of the contest, an official appeal was lodged by the team of Meeka Michael to review the outcome of the championship title fight. The appeal request was handled in a timely and professional manner by Team Michael.
Upon in-depth analysis of the HD footage by an appeals committee, it was unanimously decided that the incorrect outcome of the contest was taken by two of the judges on the night of the contest on June 24. Therefore, the WBC MuayThai Australia committee officially overturned the result of the contest to a ‘No Contest’ with the WBC MuayThai Australia super-middleweight title remaining vacant as of July 25, 2023.
This decision was not taken lightly and in no way reflects on the grit and dedication to his craft Nick Trask showcased on the night; however, for the fairness and transparency of judging: the official result on the night of two of the judges scoring the contest in favor of Nick Trask could not officially be recognized as per the analysis of the experienced review panel.
The WBC MuayThai Australian committee thanks all parties for cooperating in this crucial matter. The WBC MuayThai also recommends an immediate rematch should a suitable promoter be in place to host the rematch for the vacant WBC MuayThai Australia super-middleweight title. However, as the title is now vacant it may be contested by all or any suitable fighters.
On a final and important note, the WBC MuayThai is by no means criticizing the judges on the night as they continue to work diligently and up-skill continuously for the betterment of the sport of MuayThai in Queensland and Australia. Our organization will continue to play a vital role in educating ring officials on the key aspects of officiating in professional, amateur and youth MuayThai contests.
